There’s something inherently quirky about being British. It’s not just a nationality – Britishness is a state of being; an apologetic politeness; an awkward awareness of everybody nearby and what they may be thinking about you at any moment in time; a self-deprecating mindset that the rest of the world just can’t understand.

That’s the thing about being British – we love it, but on the surface it can appear to outsiders that we hate it. We have a dry, unparalleled wit that other nations don’t seem to get. It’s not uncommon for a transatlantic visitor to gawk in horror as one Brit calls another by unmentionable names that they wouldn’t use on their worst enemy back in the ol’ US of A, but that’s a sign of affection to us! We insult our best friends and remain stiffly polite with those we don’t like. That’s just how we are!
